Hello all!
It was just a pleasure to stand with other like minded organizations on campus at the International Justice Mission's stand4freedom event. During the day portion we were able to get HUNDREDS of students to sign a petition to their senator saying they want the vote to go through for the anti-trafficking bill! If you weren't there YOU CAN STILL PARTICIPATE: act now and click here to sign the petition. The evening portion was a blast as well with dinner and a benefit concert at hefty field. All of the proceeds are going straight to IJM so they can continue to ACTIVELY rescue and support survivors of these heinous crimes. To learn more about how IJM you can check out this TEDtalk from the founder because, the more you know.... We are also excited for the Break the Shackles benefit concert. If you live in Athens or are looking for a fun road trip to visit here get your ticket now to see Andrew Ripp at the 40 watt! Check out the pics below form #stand4freedom!

Hello! First of all, a huge THANK YOU is due to everyone who helped during freedom week! From spreading awareness and signing petitions, to donating and selling bake goods, it was all helpful and very much appreciated! Events like freedom week are very important on campus, because the bigger presence we have in the area, the more people will be reminded of the issue of human trafficking and the more involved they will become. Below are some of the photos from our awareness campaign and downtown fundraiser. Here I have attached the link to the Ted Talk we watched at the Wednesday night meeting and a link to your ethical consumer guide so you can shop wisely and ethically to avoid adding to the demand that is causing modern day slavery. If you have any questions about how you can get involved message us on our Facebook page. In upcoming news, we look forward to partnering with International Justice Mission in April for their Stand for Freedom event! Stay tuned and email [email protected] if you want to join. :-) Hello to all of you human rights activists! First of all, it was very exciting to see so many people across the nation raising awareness of human slavery on February 27th. We are appreciative of the end it movement and every coalition partner that took part in this day of awareness, including those of us who are students at U.G.A.! As promised in the last blog post, today we will be posting several links to websites where you can find more information about human trafficking to share with others. The last full week of March (23-27) will be our chapters week of raising awareness, support, and funds to end human trafficking. Contact Rachael for more information. :-) Hello all! We are assuming you are reading this because you are interested in ending modern day slavery. Approaching this worldwide problem can seem very overwhelming at times. Considering that human trafficking is a crime whose activity comes second only to the underground drug trade, it can be difficult knowing where to start or what part you can have in stopping the traffic. We know we are only students, and that we are only a small group of people, but if you can imagine thousands of groups across the nation with the same vision and the same passion for rescuing and supporting victims of human trafficking then the group starts to feel like a much more powerful force, doesn't it? We know that we can only do so much but at least we can do that! No victory is too small when it comes to human rights. Each and EVERY rescue is a noble feat; each and every victim of human trafficking is a valuable person. As a group, we hope to provide you with valuable resources and practical ways that you can become involved everyday. We know that knowledge leads to power and awareness leads to prevention. If we are able to educate the community around us on ways to avoid purchasing slave labor and ways to actively contact companies and politicians in charge of human rights decisions then that in and of itself is progress! That being said, the next blog post we have is going to be very limited on words. We will be putting together a collaboration of links and activities each one of you is able to utilize in their own path to eradicating present slavery. As Margaret Read once said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has". Join us and many others across the nation on February 27th as we do our part to stand for freedom with the End It Movement! :-) As you may know, January is human trafficking awareness month! We have been spreading awareness on campus and had a very successful day at the winter activities fair. We got to explain to dozens of students what we are doing as a group to help end human trafficking and explain what they are capable of doing as individuals. We do not believe that people should be bought and sold.
At our first semester meeting, all of the attendees made it a point to send an email to big companies asking that they be transparent about their supply chain. Human Trafficking is directly due to business demands, so one thing we can do is to put pressure on companies. They have to know they their customers are not okay with human abuse by negligence. It is up to us to alert companies of the issue of modern day slavery and to make them aware that we are interested in transparent supply chains so that we are not part of the problem but rather the solution. Made in a Free World has made it incredibly easy for you to do your part with their pre-written letter! Invite companies to use FRDM... Check it out here and TAKE ACTION! :-) Happy MLK day! We hope you are enjoying your break from Monday classes. We are using this time to prepare for the UGA Winter Activities Fair. It's this Wednesday and we will be there representing Students Ending Slavery at Tate starting at 10a.m. We look forward to seeing you there as well as at the first semester meeting at 6p.m. in Tate 472 that same evening. If you have any questions about how you can get involved with our fight to end human trafficking email [email protected]. We are always looking for support. :-) In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. we want to remember his words regarding justice: "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter". Hello everyone, As you are probably well aware, the break is officially over... but it's okay because we have exciting things in store for this semester! We will be at the U.G.A. Winter Activities fair on Wednesday, January 21st, from 10am-3pm. We have also received confirmation from campus reservations and plan to have our very first meeting that evening (1/21/15) at 6pm. Come meet us in Tate room 472 for snacks and information about what you can do to help us end modern day slavery. Not to mention you will have the opportunity to meet some really great people on campus that you might not otherwise get to know! If you couldn't tell, we are SUPER excited about this movement. Please email [email protected] with any questions or if you want to join the listerv to receive updates about meetings and philanthropy events. Have a wonderful first week back. :-) "Freeing slaves is about community. It's about strengthening community resistance in slavery hot spots so that traffickers cannot prey on vulnerable children, women and men. And it's about building a community of supporters among those of us who live with the blessing of liberty, and then building a bridge between those who need help and those who can provide it." - Free the Slaves Woo hoo! We are so excited to have received our first shipment of t-shirts from our lead organization in Washington, D.C. These shirts say "SLAVERY SUCKS" and include the logo designed by Free the Slaves from freetheslaves.net. We are planning to sell these next semester at meetings and at fundraising events. They are great quality and were made with American Apparel clothing. We have v-necks and typical tees available from small through extra large. This being said, we also want to wish everyone well on their upcoming finals. Please enjoy a safe and happy winter break from classes! Be sure to do any online holiday shopping through AmazonSmile and choose "Free the Slaves" as the charity of your choice. Before buying in-stores, ask the owner if they are transparent about their supply chain. Do they ensure fair working conditions for the people making their product? Enjoy the break and be thankful for your freedom! We have put in the request for meeting times next semester; official dates, times, and location to be announced as soon as the office of student organizations confirms our reservation requests. Happy studying students. :-) http://smile.amazon.com/ This just in: our constitution was approved by the office of student organizations at University of Georgia! We want to send a big, warm THANK YOU to everyone who is supporting us, both within U.G.A and elsewhere. We could not fight the good fight without you all, and we are so glad to all have the same end goal. We want to END human trafficking and to support survivors in their recovery.
As you may know, slavery is unfortunately not a thing of a the past. There are still upwards of 30 million people being sold into captivity at the present moment. We are students, faculty, and alumni alike that are not going to accept this cruelty. We will spread awareness and talk about types of slavery, degree of enslavement, and what we can all do together to help. Together we will be a fierce voice and a source of hope for victims of human trafficking. We will do this by providing monetary and moral support for rescued victims and by recruiting others at U.G.A to help the cause. We are dedicated to ending slavery, one persons freedom at a time. Now that we are an official organization at U.G.A. be sure to stay tuned for specific meeting times and upcoming chapter activities. Have a blessed day! :-) UGA students can join by click >> HERE << Hello all!
We are so excited to get the ball rolling for Students Ending Slavery at the University of Georgia. Our constitution and chapter startup application have been submitted and are under review with the student organization center on campus. We are so excited for this to soon be an official U.G.A. club. We will now have an available outlet to focus our efforts on ending slavery and supporting survivors of trafficking. All of the funds we raise will go directly to the activists at Free the Slaves. To check out more about them head over to https://www.freetheslaves.net. We will continue to keep you updated on chapter meetings that are in the works as soon as possible. Stay tuned and keep spreading awareness amongst your peers; many people still do not know the depths of modern day slavery! Thank you all so much for the support; we cannot wait to see what is in store for this group in the Spring. :-) Check us out on FACEBOOK |
